Chapter 4

The first Saturday with driving privileges he had one goal: to drive up to the Flower Farm to see Dr. Sanchez.

But she wasn’t at the farm. It was her call weekend. She stayed in the city when she was on call because the farm was too far away to get to emergencies quickly. A wave of disappointment flowed over Marty with such intensity that he almost started to cry. Instead, he forced himself to look around the greenhouse and ended up by filling the back of his pickup truck with a dozen flats of flower seedlings. His father would be thrilled.

When Dr. Sanchez got home from work Monday evening, her sister Rose told her the story.

“You had a visitor on Saturday, tall, muscular, handsome—a young guy,” she said. “I thought about asking him if he’d stay for coffee just so I could look at him.”

“What did he want?” Daniela asked, laughing.

“You tell me. He asked for Dr. Sanchez, so it must be a patient, or a stalker. He spent over a hundred bucks on flower plants.”

First thoughts went to Marty Saint. He’d been to the greenhouse once with a female friend. She couldn’t imagine who else it would be; who’d ask for Dr. Sanchez?

“I think I know who it is, and I agree, I need to ask him to have coffee. His age is a problem. He’s ten years younger than I am.”

“Daniela, it’s only a problem if you think it’s one. No one cares about age anymore.”

“That’s what you think.”

“What I think is that after that asshole Jack, you deserve a nice, caring, handsome younger guy who worships the ground you walk on. He obviously doesn’t care about age, because when I explained that you were in the city, he was definitely disappointed. I didn’t think to give him your phone number or to get his.”

“That’s okay. I can get his number easily. It’s in all his records.”

“So he’s a patient?”

“Yes, if it’s who I think it is. I shouldn’t divulge too much, but he was one of the firefighters who were injured in that big fire in Ramona last month.”

“Gotcha. Okay, you need to call the man,” Rose said. “Go.”

As soon as she got back to her little house on the farm, she got on the phone to the records clerk.

“Jessie, I know this is weird, but I need a patient’s phone number.”

“It’s not weird at all. A few keystrokes on the computer and it’s yours. What’s the name?”

“Martino Saint.”

“Give me a sec,” Jessie said. In five seconds, she read off a number.

“Thank you, Jessie,” she said, writing the number down.

Taking a deep breath, she keyed the number into her phone. Voicemail came on, and she hung up without leaving a message.

Marty couldn’t answer because he was out on a call, a rollover car wreck on a mountain road east of the station, their most hated area because it was dark and remote and full of tinder just waiting to explode into flame.

Extracting the victim and getting
